This expansive park attracts over 3.5 million visitors annually, offering a diverse array of attractions and activities.

A Glimpse into Portland's Green Legacy

Portland, often celebrated for its lush landscapes and commitment to sustainability, has long prioritized the integration of green spaces within its urban environment. Washington Park exemplifies this ethos, providing residents and visitors with a harmonious blend of nature and culture.

The Rich History of Washington Park

Established in 1871 with an initial purchase of 40.78 acres from Amos N. King, Washington Park has evolved significantly over the years. Initially known as City Park, the area was dense with brush and timber, even home to roaming cougars. Under the stewardship of the city's first park keeper, Charles M. Myers, the park transformed into a landscaped haven featuring drives, walkways, and ornamental displays by 1900. In 1903, renowned landscape architect John C. Olmsted recommended enhancements that further shaped the park's design and accessibility.

Attractions Within Washington Park

Washington Park is home to several notable attractions:

  • Oregon Zoo: Housing approximately 1,800 animals, the zoo offers educational exhibits and conservation programs.
  • Portland Japanese Garden: Recognized as one of the most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Japan, it provides a tranquil retreat with meticulously designed landscapes.
  • International Rose Test Garden: Boasting around 10,000 rose bushes, this garden showcases a stunning variety of roses and serves as a testing ground for new varieties.
  • Hoyt Arboretum: Featuring over 2,300 species of trees from around the world, the arboretum offers 12 miles of trails for exploration.
  • Oregon Holocaust Memorial: A poignant site dedicated to honoring the victims of the Holocaust and educating visitors about this tragic history.
